FAQ
Is EcoGPT legit? Your questions, answered.
Straight answers to what people actually ask before trying EcoGPT — how it works, the models it runs, how much water and energy it saves, and proof it plants real trees. See the partner tree-planting certificates on our About page.
Is EcoGPT legit?
Yes. EcoGPT is a real AI chat app built by an independent team based in New York City, available on the web, iOS, and Android. It runs production AI models for everyday writing, research, and brainstorming, and it funds verified reforestation through established partners — One Tree Planted, American Forests, and Trees for the Future. Those partners issue tree-planting certificates, several of which are published on our About page.
What is EcoGPT?
EcoGPT is an AI assistant — similar to ChatGPT — designed to be a more responsible alternative. It handles the same everyday tasks (writing, editing, ideation, research, planning, image generation) while using far less energy and water per query and funding real tree planting. We describe it as regenerative AI: every conversation gives something back to the planet.
How does EcoGPT work?
For most queries EcoGPT routes to efficient open-source models running on Groq's LPU infrastructure, which is purpose-built for inference and architecturally up to 10x more energy-efficient than traditional GPUs. Combined with response caching and 100% renewable energy, this uses roughly 90% less energy than defaulting to the heaviest possible model for every request. You chat exactly like any other AI app — the efficiency happens behind the scenes.
Does EcoGPT actually plant trees?
Yes, through funded partnerships rather than planting them ourselves. Every 100 messages contributes the equivalent of one tree planted, plus proportional CO2 offset, water restoration, and LED-hour credits. EcoGPT has funded more than 16,000 trees so far via One Tree Planted, American Forests, and Trees for the Future, and the partner-issued certificates are shown publicly on our About page.
Is EcoGPT greenwashing, or is it actually good for the environment?
EcoGPT's first priority is reducing impact through efficiency and thoughtful system design — not just buying offsets after the fact. Most queries run on energy-efficient open-source models on Groq LPUs powered by renewable energy, so the footprint is lowered at the source. Tree planting and environmental contributions are layered on top of that, and the funded trees are independently verified by our reforestation partners.
Is EcoGPT free?
Yes. EcoGPT has a free plan that includes a set number of messages per day. A premium subscription is available for unlimited chats and advanced features. You can start using it for free with no payment required.
How much water and energy does EcoGPT use?
Mainstream AI at global scale consumes enormous amounts of water and power for cooling and compute. EcoGPT is designed to use roughly one-tenth the resources of a heavy default stack by running efficient models on Groq LPU hardware with caching and renewable energy, and it funds water-restoration credits alongside tree planting. Your in-app eco dashboard shows your estimated energy and water savings over time.
What AI model does EcoGPT use?
For most requests EcoGPT uses efficient open-source large language models served on Groq's LPU inference hardware, chosen for a strong balance of quality and energy efficiency rather than maximum size. The system routes each request to an appropriate model so you get useful answers while keeping the environmental cost low.
Who owns EcoGPT? Who is behind it?
EcoGPT is built by a small, independent team based in New York City — designers, builders, and researchers. It is not owned by OpenAI or any other large AI company; it is an independent product created as a more responsible alternative to Big AI.
Is EcoGPT safe to use?
Yes. EcoGPT handles your conversations under a published privacy policy and standard account security, and you can delete your account and data at any time. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what is collected and how it is used.
Is EcoGPT better than ChatGPT, and how is it different?
EcoGPT isn't trying to beat ChatGPT on raw scale — it's a more responsible alternative for the same everyday tasks. The core difference is environmental: EcoGPT prioritizes energy-efficient models, renewable energy, and transparency, and it funds real reforestation with every conversation, while mainstream AI platforms typically offer little visibility into their energy or water use.
