Where things stand

Ohio's legislature is grappling with an unusually aggressive wave of data center skepticism, with bills like HB710 and SB381 seeking to outright prohibit public support for new facilities and require utility commission approval before they can connect to the grid. Alongside those, proposals to strip data center tax exemptions (SB374) and mandate water consumption reporting (HB784, SB378) reflect growing concern about the infrastructure and environmental costs of rapid AI-driven buildout. On the AI side, activity remains largely exploratory, with governance and deepfake bills still in early stages and no major legislation enacted yet.
